In 2026, the Prep toggle on purchased item records was locked. Prep for purchased items cannot be enabled — prep must be set up through recipes.
Existing prep items that were created from purchased items before the prep migration continue to work. The lock applies only to configuring new prep through a purchased item record.
Prep section on purchased item records
The Prep section on the Settings tab of a purchased item record is read-only. The behavior depends on whether prep was previously enabled for the item.
Prep is currently off
If prep is turned off for a purchased item, the Prep section displays a message that prep is no longer editable and must be set up through recipes. The toggle cannot be enabled.
Prep is currently on
If prep is currently on for a purchased item, the toggle can only be turned off. Clicking the toggle opens a confirmation dialog. This action is permanent — once prep is turned off for a purchased item, it cannot be re-enabled.
Prep items from purchased items
Prep items that were created from purchased items before the prep migration will continue to work. However, the Available toggle for these prep items is subject to a permanent lock.
Available toggle in the Prep Items list
For prep items that originated from purchased items, turning off the Available toggle is permanent. Once availability is turned off, it cannot be re-enabled for that prep recipe.
Clicking the toggle opens a confirmation dialog before the change takes effect. On these prep items, toggles that are turned off are disabled.

Clicking the Available toggle on a purchased-item-sourced prep recipe will prompt the message.

Once turned off, the toggle is disabled. This action cannot be undone.
Important Note About Prep Recipe Availability
This restriction applies only to prep items that originated from purchased items. Prep items created from recipe items are not affected and can be enabled or disabled
as usual.
Bulk actions
When a bulk Make unavailable action includes prep items that originated from purchased items, a confirmation dialog explains that some items cannot be re-enabled once marked unavailable.
When a bulk Make available action includes purchased-item prep items that have already been turned off, those items are skipped. The action applies to all other selected items.
Available to Prep on the prep recipe record
For a prep recipe that originated from a purchased item, the Available to Prep field on the Settings tab is read-only once availability has been turned off. An inline message on the record confirms that the setting cannot be changed. Unchecking this box also prompts a confirmation.
