# Use a GL Allocation Template

[GL Allocation Templates](/doc/docs/gl-allocation-templates-overview-security) can be used from the [Journal Entry](/doc/docs/new-journal-entry) record or within the [GL Allocation Template](/doc/docs/gl-allocation-templates-create-and-edit-a-template). When selected from a Journal Entry, the record will auto-populate with the details outlined in the template.

> When using a template with a Destination Location that is assigned to a different Legal Entity than the Source Account, [Intercompany Transactions](/doc/docs/intercompany-transactions) will be created.

## Use a GL Allocation Template within a Journal Entry

Use a GL allocation template within a journal entry to auto-fill the journal entry with the details defined in the allocation template.

To use a GL allocation template, follow these steps:

*Click steps to expand for additional information and images.*

****1)** Open the **desired journal entry record** or **create a new journal entry**.**

**From the journal entries page:**

**Create a new journal entry :**

****2)** Click the ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/5c9d1111-0c69-4e96-8910-d7f2750fdc9d/Images/Documentation/image-CX697YMD.png)**menu** then select **Use GL allocation.****

****3)** Select the **desired GL allocation**.**

Use the **search bar** to search for a specific allocation name or click **create new** to open a new [allocation template](/doc/docs/gl-allocation-templates-create-and-edit-a-template).

****4)** Click **Use Allocation**.**

****5)** Review the populated **comment** and **GL details**.**

If a journal entry comment is included in the [allocation template](/doc/docs/gl-allocation-templates-overview-security), it populates the header comment automatically.

The first detail line represents the source account and its balance for the locations and time frame defined in the allocation template.

The remaining detail lines list the destination accounts, with amounts allocated according to the distribution defined in the template.

****6)** Enter the **journal entry header fields**.**

****7)** Make **adjustments** to the **details** as needed. *(Optional)***

Adjustments are not required but can be useful when additional lines should be added to the journal entry or amounts need to be adjusted.

****8) Save or Approve** the journal entry.**
