Configured pay periods are used for locking [DSS punch edits](/doc/docs/punch-edits) and [Time & Attendance](/doc/docs/timecards-overview). > [!NOTE] > If [Time & Attendance](/doc/docs/timecards-overview) is **enabled**, the **Pay Period tab is hidden** from Labor Rules. Pay period settings move to Time & Attendance Settings to simplify configuration. > [!NOTE] > If both [Time & Attendance](/doc/docs/timecards-overview) and [R365 Payroll](/doc/docs/payroll) (with [Payroll Calendar](/doc/docs/payroll-calendar-page)) are **enabled**, the **Pay Period Date card** in Time & Attendance Settings is also **hidden**. In this case, Payroll Calendar is the source of truth for pay period dates. --- ## Security Users must have the following permission(s) to create or edit pay period rules: - Labor → Pay Periods → Create Pay Periods - Labor → Pay Periods → Edit Pay Periods These permissions can be added to [custom user roles](https://restaurant365.us.document360.io/doc/docs/custom-user-roles) or [individual users](https://restaurant365.us.document360.io/doc/docs/users-overview-and-security). The [Permission Access report](https://restaurant365.us.document360.io/doc/docs/generating-a-permissions-access-report) can be used to determine which user roles or users already have these permissions assigned. For more information, see [User Setup and Security](/doc/docs/user-setup-security-and-location-access). --- ## Create a Pay Period Rule Follow these steps to create a pay period rule: *Click steps to expand for additional information and images.* ****1)** Navigate to the [Labor Rules page](/doc/docs/labor-rules-page).** ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/5c9d1111-0c69-4e96-8910-d7f2750fdc9d/Images/Documentation/image-0IQZ29TA.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T09%3A38%3A00Z&se=2026-11-01T10%3A38%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=eDlH9fEabPIIOC1%2BY4oRhb2%2FSfrWUWZOW17xZpWLsPc%3D) ****2)** Click **+****Create** on the Labor Rules page.** ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/5c9d1111-0c69-4e96-8910-d7f2750fdc9d/Images/Documentation/image-W0B9VYWE.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T09%3A38%3A00Z&se=2026-11-01T10%3A38%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=eDlH9fEabPIIOC1%2BY4oRhb2%2FSfrWUWZOW17xZpWLsPc%3D) ****3)** Select **Pay Period.**** ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/5c9d1111-0c69-4e96-8910-d7f2750fdc9d/Images/Documentation/image-AZ3Z7XVJ.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T09%3A38%3A00Z&se=2026-11-01T10%3A38%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=eDlH9fEabPIIOC1%2BY4oRhb2%2FSfrWUWZOW17xZpWLsPc%3D) ****4)** **Name** the pay period rule.** The rule name must be unique within pay period rules and does not need to be unique across other rule types. ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/5c9d1111-0c69-4e96-8910-d7f2750fdc9d/Images/Documentation/image-49GPV183.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T09%3A38%3A00Z&se=2026-11-01T10%3A38%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=eDlH9fEabPIIOC1%2BY4oRhb2%2FSfrWUWZOW17xZpWLsPc%3D) ****5)** Set the **first day** of the first pay period for the rule.** The first day of the first pay period establishes the first pay period for assigned locations and defines the start date of future pay periods. ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/5c9d1111-0c69-4e96-8910-d7f2750fdc9d/Images/Documentation/image-4KC7X67R.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T09%3A38%3A00Z&se=2026-11-01T10%3A38%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=eDlH9fEabPIIOC1%2BY4oRhb2%2FSfrWUWZOW17xZpWLsPc%3D) ****6)** Select the **pay cycle**.** **Weekly** - Pay period is seven days long, starting on the same day of the week as the first pay period. **Bi-Weekly** - Pay period is fourteen days long, starting on the same day of the week as the first pay period. **Semi-Monthly** - Each month has two pay periods.
